Before Metallica had a record deal, before they had a producer, before anyone outside the San Francisco Bay Area had seriously heard of them, they flew to Copenhagen.

This is not the obvious place for that story to go. But Sweet Silence Studios, operating out of a converted space in the Danish capital from 1977, had developed a reputation that was pulling in international acts long before the internet made that kind of discovery easy. They came for the room. They came for Flemming Rasmussen. And they left with some of the most important recordings in heavy music history.


How Sweet Silence started

Sweet Silence was founded in 1977 by Freddy Hansson. The studio was built with a seriousness of purpose that was unusual for Denmark at the time: a large live room capable of handling loud, amplified rock music at full volume, proper acoustic treatment, and a console and outboard equipment chain that could compete with anything in London or Hamburg.

Denmark in the late 1970s was not an obvious centre of gravity for international rock recording. That would change, and Sweet Silence was a significant reason why.

The studio's early work was primarily with Danish acts. Flemming Rasmussen and the Metallica records

The standard explanation for Sweet Silence's success focuses on Flemming Rasmussen and his technical skill, which is accurate but incomplete. Rasmussen was exceptional, but exceptional engineers work well in good rooms and poorly in bad ones. The room was doing real work.

The Sweet Silence live room had the dimensions and treatment to handle loud acoustic sources without the problems that plague smaller or less carefully designed spaces.
