Mixing FAQ for Artists
Is my home recording good enough for professional mixing? Definitely. A huge portion of the records you hear today started in bedrooms and rehearsal spaces. Our job at Tapetown isn't to judge the room you recorded in; it is to take those performances and give them the weight and "finish" they deserve. Our hybrid analogue setup is specifically designed to add the depth and physical texture that home-recorded tracks sometimes lack.
What exactly is "Analogue Hybrid Mixing" and why should I care? In short, it means we use the best of both worlds. We use the precision of digital software for the heavy lifting and editing, but we run your audio out of the computer and through physical hardware—real transformers, tubes, and circuits. This adds a natural "glue" and warmth to the sound that software can't quite replicate. It makes the music feel like it is moving through air, not just living in a computer.
How do we handle the timeline and delivery? Every project at Tapetown is handled with individual care, so we don't use a "one-size-fits-all" turnaround time. Our schedule fluctuates based on current studio sessions and the complexity of the projects in house. When you reach out, please let us know if you have a specific release date or deadline in mind. We always do our best to accommodate your schedule and will give you a clear delivery window once we have evaluated your tracks.
Do I need to remove my plugins before I send you the files? If a plugin is part of your "sound"—like a specific distorted delay or a lo-fi filter you love—keep it. That is part of your artistic vision. However, please remove any "corrective" plugins like basic EQs, compressors, or limiters that you’ve put on just to make it louder. We want to work with the rawest, highest-quality version of your vision so our hardware can do its work effectively.
Can I attend the mixing session if I’m traveling through Aarhus? We love it when artists can be in the room, but it depends on the studio schedule. Many artists choose to combine a mixing session with a visit to Aarhus to experience the local scene. If you're interested in an attended session, let’s chat about it early so we can coordinate the dates.
How many songs can you mix at once? Whether it is a single, an EP, or a full-length album, we approach every project with the same level of focus. For larger projects, we actually prefer to mix them in "blocks." This ensures that the sonic identity remains consistent across the whole record. If you are planning an album, let us know early so we can carve out the right amount of time in the studio calendar.
What if I’m not in Denmark? How does remote mixing work? Distance isn't a barrier. We have mixed tracks for artists all over Europe and the whole world. We use high-quality file sharing for the stems, and we can even set up "attended" remote sessions where you can hear the mix in high-definition from your own studio. It is a collaborative process - we are always just an email or a call away.
How many revisions do I get? The amount differs depending on the circumstances and price. We want you to be 100% happy with the result. Usually, after the first mix is sent, we have a chat about the small details—maybe the vocal needs to be a hair louder in the chorus, or the bass needs a bit more grit. We tweak it until we're both satisfied the song is the best version of itself it can possibly be.
Can you make my digital recording sound like it was recorded to tape? Yes, we definitely can. While we can’t go back in time and change the tracking process, we're able to use real analogue tape saturation and hardware transformers during the mixing stage. This rounds off the sharp digital "edges" and gives the music that nostalgic, thick character that people associate with classic indie records.
Do you offer mastering as well? While we focus primarily on the mix, we work closely with several world-class mastering engineers who understand the "Tapetown Sound." We can either handle the hand-off for you or provide you with "pre-mastered" mixes that are ready for the final polish.
What do you need from me to start? The most important things are your consolidated stems (all starting at the same point), a rough mix of your song, and a couple of reference tracks that show us the "vibe" you are aiming for.
Let’s talk about your sound.
Every project is different, and we prefer to start with a conversation rather than a price list. If you have a release date in mind or just want to see if our analogue hybrid setup is the right fit for your tracks, send us a message. We’re always happy to listen to a rough mix and talk through the possibilities.
