There is no European Drop of Sun, but there are six studios in Europe that work the way Alex Farrar's Asheville room works, a band playing together, performance before polish, the sound of the room kept in the record: Toe Rag in London, Black Box in the Anjou countryside in France, Clouds Hill in Hamburg, Analogue Catalogue in Northern Ireland, Foel in mid-Wales and our own Tapetown in Denmark. If you want the records Wednesday and MJ Lenderman made, Farrar is the person to call, and he mixes remotely. If you want that approach within a train ride, this is the list, with what each room does, who runs it, and what kind of band it suits.

What Drop of Sun actually is

Alex Farrar is a producer, engineer and mixer in Asheville, North Carolina. Wednesday recorded Twin Plagues in about a week and a half in the summer of 2020 after their Philadelphia plans fell through and a local venue owner suggested Drop of Sun; Farrar mixed that record, produced Rat Saw God (2023) and Bleeds, produced MJ Lenderman's Boat Songs (2022) and Manning Fireworks (2024), engineered and mixed Snail Mail's Valentine (2021), engineered and mixed Hurray for the Riff Raff's Life on Earth and Plains' debut with Brad Cook, and mixed Hotline TNT's Cartwheel (2023) and Raspberry Moon (2025), the second of which the band tracked as a live band for the first time. His method, in his own words, is to avoid mood boards and reference tracks and let each song decide, and to go for a big, forceful sound that comes from his years playing heavy music. What bands hear in those records is a room, a band, and a producer who serves the song's goal rather than a genre template. That is reproducible. The particular room is not.

How to read the table

Toe Rag is the purest version of the idea and the least like a country retreat: a London room where the engineer's taste and the tape machine are the point. Black Box is the one with Farrar's spiritual lineage, through Iain Burgess and the Chicago engineers who recorded bands as they played. Clouds Hill is the big room, for a band that wants a Neve, a grand piano and a view of the river, and it is the only one on the list with the scale of an American destination studio. Analogue Catalogue is the folk and indie room, which is the closest match to the Wednesday and Lenderman end of the Drop of Sun catalogue; its client list reads like a Rough Trade and Domino back catalogue. Foel is for the heavy version. Tapetown is the one built around filmed live sessions, where the record is a performance by definition, and the one where the person who records you also mixes you afterwards, remotely, with you in the session.

What the live-band approach needs from you

Rehearsal. A band that can play the songs start to finish without the click is the whole premise; the studio's job is to put good microphones in a good room and keep the take. Decisions before the session, not after: tempo, arrangement, which guitar sound. Fewer songs than you think: three or four a day with proper listening is realistic, and a ten-song album in a week is a good week. A tolerance for imperfection, because the take with the best feel will have a bum note somewhere, and the engineers on this list will keep it. And a mix plan: some of these studios mix in-house, some hand off, and Tapetown mixes remotely with attended sessions so the band hears every change.

Where Tapetown fits, honestly

We are not a Neve-and-grand-piano room, and we do not have 12 beds yet. What we have is a decade of recording bands live in one room, the credits to show for it, and a mixing practice built on those recordings, so a band that records with us gets the live approach from the first microphone to the master. Recording happens at our studio on Djursland, about 30 minutes from Aarhus; The Reserve at Friland, a 400 m² complex with around 200 m² of studios plus art space and accommodation, opens in 2027 and adds the residential part. Our live-in-a-room method is written up in Recording a Band Live in a Room.

What it costs

The studios above quote day rates or project rates on request; Analogue Catalogue publishes accommodation at 80 pounds a night for the studio beds. For the mixing side, professional mixing in Europe is commonly quoted at roughly 400 to 1,200 euro per song. Tapetown quotes per project, because studio days, song count and scope change the price; write to us through the contact page with the songs and dates and we reply with a plan and a number.

FAQ

Who is Alex Farrar and where is Drop of Sun?

Alex Farrar is a producer, engineer and mixer in Asheville, North Carolina. He mixed Wednesday's Twin Plagues, produced Rat Saw God and Bleeds, produced MJ Lenderman's Boat Songs and Manning Fireworks, engineered and mixed Snail Mail's Valentine, and mixed Hotline TNT's recent albums. Drop of Sun is the Asheville studio where Wednesday went to record in 2020.

Is there a studio in Europe like Drop of Sun?

Not a copy. The closest in approach are Toe Rag in London, Black Box in France, Clouds Hill in Hamburg, Analogue Catalogue in Northern Ireland, Foel in Wales and Tapetown in Denmark, which all record bands playing together and keep the room in the record.

Which of these studios can a band stay at?

Black Box, Clouds Hill, Analogue Catalogue and Foel are residential. Tapetown does not offer accommodation yet; The Reserve at Friland, opening 2027, includes it.

Can we record live in a room and have someone else mix remotely?

Yes, and it is common. Tapetown does both for its own recordings and mixes live recordings made elsewhere, with the band in the session remotely. Send the multitracks and the rough mix.

If your record wants the live-band approach and a European postcode, start with recording a band live in a room at Tapetown and write to us with your dates.

A live session is the cheapest honest record a band can make, and the hardest format to find a studio for: most "live session" results are media series you cannot book (KEXP, Tiny Desk, Audiotree, Crack TV's Invada Sessions) or video companies that shoot a performance without recording it properly. This list is the studios in Europe that record a band playing together, deliver release-quality audio, and film it or are built for filming: Tapetown in Denmark, Kore, Beckview, Resident, Crouch End and OYFE in the UK, The Hideout in Aalborg, OSLO STUDIOS in Switzerland and Little Big Beat in Liechtenstein. We run one of them, so we are first; the rest are in order of how close they are to the format, not of quality.

What separates a live session from a filmed rehearsal

Three questions sort the studios above. Is the audio recorded on multitrack by an engineer whose job is the record, with the video following, or is the camera crew in charge and the sound an afterthought? Is the take kept as played, or quietly repaired afterwards? And is the room built for a band playing together: isolation where it is needed, bleed where it helps, and a mix that treats the room as part of the sound? The studios that publish a per-song video price are usually selling the video; the ones that talk about consoles, tape and mixes are selling the record. Decide which you are buying before you compare prices.

How Tapetown does it

A Live at Tapetown session is one take per song with the whole band in the room, no click and no overdubs, recorded on multitrack and mixed afterwards by the person who recorded it, which since 2016 has mostly been Rasmus Bredvig. The cameras follow the sound, not the other way round. Sessions have been recorded at the studio in Aarhus and on location, from a bowling alley in Odder to the Great Hall of Musikhuset Aarhus for Elias Rønnenfelt at SPOT Festival 2025 and the KEXP sessions at SPOT. The full list of who recorded and mixed what, session by session, is the Tapetown session credits; the audio of most sessions was mastered by Emil Thomsen at ET Mastering. The Reserve at Friland, our new complex on Djursland opening in 2027, is being built with live rooms for exactly this.

What it costs

The published UK packages run from about £300 for one filmed song to £750 for a multi-camera day, with mixing and mastering sometimes included and sometimes not. Danish studio days are published at around DKK 3,500 including the engineer, before video. Tapetown quotes per session, because a one-song clip for socials and a four-song filmed set with full mix and master are different jobs; tell us the band size, the songs and the dates through the contact page and you get a number within two working days.

FAQ

Can we bring our own videographer to a live session?

Most studios allow it; some, like the audio-only live rooms in the UK, expect it. Ask who directs on the day, because two crews with two plans is how a session loses its takes.

How many songs fit in a live session day?

Three or four with proper soundcheck and listen-backs; a full set on location is possible when the set is rehearsed.

Do we need a label or a big budget for a live session?

No. Most studios in the table take unsigned bands (Little Big Beat books artists for its own series), and the live format rewards a rehearsed band more than an expensive room.

What should we do with the session afterwards?

Release the audio as a live EP, premiere the video with a blog or magazine that covers sessions, and keep the stems for the deluxe edition. KEXP, Tiny Desk, Audiotree and the European radio sessions are earned, not booked; a strong self-made session is what their producers watch. Our guide to how music blogs cover live sessions has the specifics.

Facts checked on 31 October 2026 against each studio's own page or the linked article; prices are the studios' published figures and may have changed. If you run a studio that belongs on this list, write to us with the format, a price and a session, and we will add it.

If you want to record your band live in one room, filmed, with the audio mixed by the person who recorded it, start with recording a band live in a room at Tapetown and write to us with your dates.

Aarhus has a small number of studios and engineers that alternative bands actually use, and most of them are connected: Aarhus Lydstudie, run by Asger Christensen and Iris Marie Jakobsen since 2007; Tallman Studio and MACH Mastering, both with public per-song prices; Everloud Studios for metal and hard rock; and the Lydhavnen community, home to ET Mastering and Gyraf Audio. Tapetown, which started at the old Feedback studio in 2011 and co-founded Lydhavnen in 2012, still mixes in Aarhus: our mix studio in the city is open, we record at our recording studio on Djursland, about 30 minutes out, and we mix and master online. This guide lists what each does, with a link to their own page, and what to ask before you book anyone.

How we built the list

Everything here comes from the studios' own pages, Tape Op and MusicTech interviews, and marketplace listings, each linked. We include ourselves where our history places us. Prices appear only where a studio publishes them. Checked 31 October 2026.

The Aarhus scene in brief

Feedback was the city's historic studio until it closed in 2011; its engineers started their own companies, Tapetown among them. Lydhavnen, the Sound Harbour, opened in 2012 in a former meatpacking district with local-authority support and houses twelve businesses in recording, mastering and music technology. SPOT Festival brings the Nordic music industry to Aarhus every spring; we recorded live sessions at SPOT in 2019, 2024 and 2025, including Elias Rønnenfelt in Musikhuset's Great Hall, all listed in our session credits. Drowned in Sound once called Tapetown the Sound of Aarhus, a line we still get asked about.

Where Tapetown fits now

We started in 2011 at Feedback in Viby and co-founded Lydhavnen in 2012. Our Lydhavnen recording studio, above a 300-capacity venue, has closed; the Tapetown mix studio in Aarhus is open and operating. Recording happens at our recording studio on Djursland while we build our new home at Friland, The Reserve, a 400 square metre complex with around 200 square metres of studios plus art space and accommodation, about 30 minutes outside Aarhus in a nature reserve, opening in 2027. Mixing and mastering are online for artists anywhere, and Rasmus Bredvig still records and mixes the Tapetown Sessions. If you want a recording room inside the city limits, the studios above are the ones to call; if you want a mix in Aarhus, a band-in-a-room recording 30 minutes out on Djursland, or a mix from Denmark wherever you are, that is us.

What to ask a studio before booking

  1. Who will engineer the session, by name, and what have they recorded in your genre?

  2. Can the whole band play in one room, and how many channels can they track at once?

  3. What is included in the day: setup time, backline, an assistant, mix time?

  4. Who mixes and who masters, and are they the same people?

  5. How do revisions work, and what exactly do you deliver?

  6. Can you take the multitracks with you afterwards, and in what format?

What it costs

Aarhus studios rarely publish day rates; the two that publish per-song prices are in the table. Professional mixing in Europe is commonly quoted between roughly 400 and 1,200 euro per song, with mastering separate. We quote each project after hearing a rough mix or talking through the days needed, because scope, song count and studio time change the price; the contact page is the way to ask.

FAQ

Which recording studios are in Aarhus?

Aarhus Lydstudie, Tallman Studio, MACH Mastering, Everloud Studios, ET Mastering and Gyraf Audio at Lydhavnen, plus a longer list of individual engineers on SoundBetter's Aarhus page. Tapetown started in Aarhus, still mixes in the city, and records about 30 minutes away on Djursland.

Does Tapetown still have a studio in Aarhus?

Yes. The Tapetown mix studio in Aarhus is open and operating. The former Lydhavnen recording studio has closed; recording happens at our recording studio on Djursland, and The Reserve at Friland opens in 2027. Mixing and mastering are also done online.

Can a band from abroad record in or near Aarhus?

Yes. Aarhus Airport is on Djursland about 41 kilometres from the city, Grenaa has a ferry to Sweden and Ebeltoft a ferry to Zealand. We have recorded and mixed sessions for bands from the US, Mexico, Sweden, the UK and Ireland, including Mikal Cronin, Mint Field, Pale Honey, Ulrika Spacek and The Murder Capital.

Is online mixing from Aarhus different from mixing in person?

The work is the same; the difference is how you take part. We run attended remote sessions across time zones so you hear the first pass with us, and we deliver stereo WAV files with stems or other formats on request.
