You Recorded Your Band Live. Here Is How Mixing Changes

Mixing a band recorded live in a room is a different job from mixing an overdubbed studio production, and most artists find this out at the worst possible moment: after sending their stems to an engineer who treats the bleed as damage. This guide is for bands who recorded live (in a studio, a rehearsal space, a venue or a church) and now need the recording mixed. It covers what actually changes at the mixing stage, what can and cannot be fixed after a live take, how to choose an engineer who will not sterilize the performance, and exactly how to prepare and export live stems.
Why live recordings are mixed differently
In an overdubbed production, every track is isolated. The mixer can process each element independently, replace anything, tune anything, move anything. The mix is assembly.
A live recording is one acoustic event captured from many angles. Every microphone heard every instrument. The drums are in the vocal mic, the guitar is in the snare mic, the room is in everything. The tracks are not independent, and pretending they are is how live mixes go wrong. Processing one channel changes the sound of five others, a gate on the snare chops the hi-hat, heavy EQ on the vocal mic thins out the cymbals riding along in it. The mix is not assembly. It is more like developing a photograph that already exists.
Done right, this is not a limitation. The shared room and the bleed are why live recordings feel physical in a way assembled productions rarely do. What can be fixed after a live take, and what cannot
Be realistic about this before you book anyone, because no engineer, however good, mixes their way out of physics.
Fixable in the mix: overall balance (within limits set by the bleed), tonal shaping, phase relationships between mics, low-end control, a snare that lost its crack behind the wash, a vocal that needs to come forward, harshness from a difficult room, dynamics and glue, and the general sense of size and depth. A good engineer can also rescue specific problems like proximity-muddied vocals or cymbal bleed swamping the vocal mic; a surprising amount of what artists assume is ruined is just unmanaged.
Not fixable: a performance problem. If the take rushes, the take rushes everywhere, because every mic heard it. Individual notes cannot be tuned without the bleed copies giving it away. A guitar solo cannot be replaced without the original ghosting underneath. The arrangement cannot be changed. This is the deal you made when you recorded live, and it is a good deal: you traded editability for a performance that actually happened. The engineer question: find someone who wants the bleed
Most mixing engineers are trained on isolated multitracks, and their reflexes (gate it, clean it, separate it) are wrong for your recording. Ask one question before you hire anyone for a live mix: "How do you handle bleed?" The wrong answer treats bleed as a problem to remove. The right answer treats it as the glue of the recording and talks about phase, mic prioritization, and making the room work for the mix. Phase is the real technical craft here: which mics to build on and which to use sparingly, so the kit sounds massive instead of hollow.
The other reflex to screen for is correction. An engineer who quantizes and tunes by default will fight your recording line by line and lose. How to prepare live stems for mixing
Live sessions produce specific stem problems that studio productions do not. Get these right and the engineer spends their time on the music instead of forensics.
Export every microphone, raw, from zero. Every channel consolidated from the same start point, no processing printed. Do not pre-mix the drums to a stereo stem, and do not gate anything. The bleed relationships are the recording; let the engineer manage them with everything on the table.
Name tracks by source and position, not just instrument. "SnareTop_57", "RoomFar_Pair", "VoxLead_SM7". With live recordings the mic and its placement are information the engineer needs for phase decisions.
Include both DI and mic for bass (and guitar if you split them). The two-signal bass capture is standard live practice precisely because it gives the mix flexibility later. Send both, labeled.
Send the room mics even if they sound wrong solo. Room mics always sound wrong solo. They are also where the size of the finished mix comes from.
Include your rough mix and a note about the room. Where it was recorded, what it sounded like in there, what the take felt like. The rough mix documents your intention; the note explains what the room mics are carrying.
Say what must not be lost. The energy of the last chorus, the way the drums sit back, the ragged vocal in the bridge. For a live recording this list matters more than any reference track, because the thing you are protecting only exists on this take.

What to expect from the finished mix
A well-mixed live recording should feel like the best seat in the room: every instrument audible, the space real, the performance present and unmediated. It will not sound like a gridded studio production, and if it comes back sounding like one, something was ironed out that you paid to keep. Judge the first mix by one question: does it still feel like the take? Louder, brighter and deeper are revision notes. The feeling of five people in a room is not recoverable once it has been cleaned away.
Expect the process to be slightly less surgical than a studio mix in revisions, too. "Turn the hi-hat down" may genuinely not be possible in isolation. A good engineer will tell you which notes are physics and which are faders, and will find the musical route to what you actually meant.
FAQ: mixing live recordings
Can a live recording sound as good as a studio recording?
Yes, and for band music it often sounds better: the shared room and real-time interaction give a physicality that isolated overdubs struggle to fake. It needs an engineer who mixes live material on its own terms instead of correcting it toward a studio production.
Can you remove bleed from live tracks?
Partially, and mostly you should not want to. Bleed handled well is glue and size; bleed removed aggressively leaves thin, phasey tracks and artifacts. The craft is managing phase and prioritizing mics, not erasing the room.
Should I send processed or raw stems from a live session?
Raw, every mic, from zero, with your rough mix alongside. Keep creative effects that define your sound printed or clearly noted, and leave all corrective processing off.
How much does mixing a live recording cost?
