Indie Rock Mixing Engineers in 2026: Who Mixed the Records Bands Reference, and Who Takes Remote Work

5 min read

The indie rock records bands reference were mixed by a small group of engineers: Dave Fridmann (MGMT, Tame Impala's Innerspeaker), Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, Built to Spill), John Agnello (Kurt Vile), Peter Katis and Craig Silvey (The National, Arcade Fire), Alan Moulder (The Killers, Wet Leg), Shawn Everett (The War on Drugs), Mike Mogis (Phoebe Bridgers, boygenius) and Catherine Marks (Manchester Orchestra). Almost none of them advertise remote mixing. The engineers who say on their own pages that they mix indie rock sent in from elsewhere include Larry Crane in Portland, Ben Etter in Atlanta, Jack Shirley in Oakland, Jordan Koop in British Columbia and, in Denmark, Tapetown.

We are on this list ourselves. Tapetown Studio is a mixing, mastering and live-recording studio for indie and alternative music, founded by Rasmus Bredvig in 2011, with studios in Aarhus and on Djursland, Denmark. We put ourselves where our credits put us. Every other name is here because of a credit we checked, and nobody paid to be on the list.

How we built the list

In October 2026 we checked every credit against the album's own credits, mostly the personnel on its Wikipedia page, or the engineer's published discography, and we say which is which. A remote line is only there when the engineer's own page or profile offers to mix records made elsewhere.

Four credits that get repeated wrongly:

  • *Arctic Monkeys' AM*** (2013) was produced by James Ford with Ross Orton, and mixed by Tchad Blake.

  • *The Killers' Hot Fuss*** (2004) was produced by Jeff Saltzman and the band. Alan Moulder mixed seven of its tracks, including "Somebody Told Me"; Mark Needham mixed "Mr. Brightside".

  • *Tame Impala's Innerspeaker*** (2010) was produced by Kevin Parker. Dave Fridmann mixed it.

  • *The National's Trouble Will Find Me** (2013) was mixed by Craig Silvey, not Peter Katis, who made Boxer* with the band.

We found no page where these engineers advertise remote mixing. The nearest is Dave Fridmann, who produced and mixed Mogwai's As the Love Continues (2021) while producing the sessions remotely over a video call.

What the records teach is that indie rock is the widest of our genres. Oracular Spectacular and Boxer came out within months of each other and share almost nothing in sound. Pick two records you want yours to sit next to, then look for the person whose credits sit close to them.

If you are in Australia: Studios 301 in Sydney offers online mixing with its own engineers, though we found no indie rock mix credit to check on the page. How mixing from Europe works for you: Online Mixing and Mastering from Denmark for Bands in the US, Canada and Australia.

Studios in Europe

  • Chem19, Scotland (Paul Savage). He co-produced, recorded and mixed The Twilight Sad's The Wrong Car EP (FatCat, 2010) and takes mix bookings, though his page doesn't mention remote work.

  • Abbey Road and Metropolis, London. Both sell online mixing and assign an engineer, but neither page names an indie rock mix you can check.

  • Tapetown Studio, Aarhus, Denmark (that's us). Rasmus Bredvig recorded and mixed live sessions with Ulrika Spacek (London, 2017), The Fresh & Onlys (San Francisco, 2017), Pale Honey (Sweden, 2017), Les Big Byrd (Sweden, 2019) and Mikal Cronin (2020), recorded and mixed FLOWERS' Doom City (2019), and produced Abdomen's Yes, I Don't Know (FatCat, 2025). Gustav Scheel mixes and masters indie, alternative and folk records with him; we master in-house and also work with Emil Thomsen at ET Mastering. We quote each project in USD, EUR or DKK after hearing the rough mix. More: indie rock mixing at Tapetown.

How to choose

  1. Start from two records. Indie rock covers Fleet Foxes and the Arctic Monkeys. Name the two records you want to sit next to, and find who mixed them.

  2. Decide where the vocal lives. Up front like a pop record, or inside the band? It is the first argument in most indie rock mixes: Vocals Up Front or Buried?

  3. Keep the band sounding like a band. Pop templates flatten indie records: Why Pop Templates Ruin Indie Rock, and on the parts, drums, guitars and low end.

  4. Pay for one song first. Send the same song with the same notes to two or three people and compare.

  5. Read the credit line, not the client list. A record that says "mixed by" is the proof.

FAQ

Who mixed Arctic Monkeys' AM?

Tchad Blake mixed AM (2013). James Ford produced it with Ross Orton.

Who produced The Killers' Hot Fuss?

Jeff Saltzman and The Killers produced Hot Fuss (2004). Alan Moulder mixed seven of its tracks, and Mark Needham mixed "Mr. Brightside".

Do the famous indie rock mixers take remote work?

Most of the engineers on the reference records don't advertise remote mixing on their own pages. The engineers in this list who say they mix records made elsewhere are Larry Crane, Ben Etter, Jordan Koop, Jack Shirley and Tapetown.

How do indie rock mixing engineers price their work?

Per song or per project. The price depends on the engineer, the number of songs and the scope of the record, so ask for a quote with your rough mix. Tapetown quotes each project after hearing the rough mix, in USD, EUR or DKK.

Can a US indie rock band have its record mixed in Europe?

Yes. You send stems and a rough mix, check each version on your own speakers, and can listen in live to an attended session. We have mixed sessions for US bands such as The Fresh & Onlys, Mikal Cronin, Bambara and Moaning.

Send us a song

If your record belongs somewhere on this list, send a rough mix and two references through online mixing, and tell us what has to survive the mix. List last checked: 28 October 2026. We review it every three months.
