Shoegaze and Dream Pop Mixing Engineers in 2026: Who Mixes the Records, and Who Takes Remote Work

6 min read

The shoegaze and dream pop records bands reference were mixed by a small group of people: Alan Moulder (Ride's Nowhere), Kevin Shields (Loveless), Chris Coady (Slowdive's 2017 album and DIIV's Frog in Boiling Water), Shawn Everett, Sonny DiPerri, Will Yip and Jack Shirley. Few of them advertise remote work. The engineers who say openly that they mix shoegaze remotely include Chris Perry and Jordan Koop in Canada, Colin Christian and Kevin Flick in the US, and, in Europe, Tapetown in Denmark.

We are on this list ourselves. Tapetown Studio is a mixing, mastering and live-recording studio for indie and alternative music, founded by Rasmus Bredvig in 2011, with studios in Aarhus and on Djursland, Denmark. We put ourselves where our credits put us. Every other name is here because of a credit we checked, and nobody paid to be on the list.

How we built the list

In October 2026 we checked every credit below against the album's credits (Wikipedia, Bandcamp, label pages) or press coverage that names the engineer. A "takes remote work" line is only there when the engineer's own page or profile says so. Where a credit could only be found on the engineer's own site, we say so.

Three credits get repeated wrongly online, so here they are as the records list them:

  • Loveless (1991) was produced and mixed by Kevin Shields. Colm Ó Cíosóig mixed "Touched". Alan Moulder was one of about 18 credited engineers.

  • *Slowdive's everything is alive*** (2023): Shawn Everett mixed six of the eight tracks, and Neil Halstead mixed the other two.

  • *Nothing's Guilty of Everything** (2014) was mixed and engineered by Jeff Zeigler, not Will Yip. Yip's Nothing record is The Great Dismal* (2020).

We found no page where the engineers in this table advertise remote mixing; Jack Shirley's site asks you to email for rates and availability. Two engineers worth knowing for the sound rather than the mix: Andy Savours, the credited engineer on My Bloody Valentine's m b v (2013), and Ian Davenport at Courtyard Studio in Oxfordshire, who engineered both recent Slowdive albums (2017 and 2023).

What the records teach is that "the shoegaze sound" is several sounds. The two Slowdive albums were mixed by different people, and Wikipedia's article on everything is alive describes Everett's mix as making the drums dirtier. Will Yip has said that Title Fight didn't set out to make a shoegaze record on Hyperview, and that the comparison came from his post-production choices. Pick the record you want to sound like before you pick a person.

Studios in Europe that mix shoegaze

  • Mark Gardener, OX4 Sound, Oxford. Ride's singer and guitarist mixes for other bands: Dead Horse One's The West Is The Best (2019, France) and Sun Mahshene's "New Shores" (2024, Dublin).

  • Alex Greaves, The Nave, Leeds. He produced bdrmm's Microtonic (2025, Rock Action), a record the band built by sending audio files back and forth with him remotely (The Arts Desk).

  • Ian Davenport, Courtyard Studio, Oxfordshire. The engineer on both recent Slowdive albums; he also mixes, for example Smoke Fairies' Carried in Sound (2023).

  • Tapetown Studio, Aarhus, Denmark (that's us). Rasmus Bredvig engineered and mixed Catch the Breeze's Glow (Kundalini Records, 2018), recorded at Tapetown, and the band's Into the Wide (2022) was recorded live at Tapetown. Glow was covered by 19 outlets in 9 countries, among them Drowned in Sound (press). Rasmus also recorded and mixed live sessions with The Telescopes (UK, 2017), Dead Vibrations (Sweden, 2017) and Mint Field (Tijuana, 2019), and In Caravans' Sunken Streets EP (2019). Gustav Scheel mixes and masters with him; we master in-house and also work with Emil Thomsen at ET Mastering. We mix remotely for bands in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and Europe, with attended sessions across time zones, and quote each project in USD, EUR or DKK after hearing the rough mix. We found no other studio in Scandinavia with a checkable shoegaze mixing credit and a page that offers remote work. If you know one, tell us and we'll check it for the next update.

How to choose

  1. Start from a record, not a name. Pick two records whose sound you want. Look up who mixed them: Wikipedia, Bandcamp and Discogs usually say. If that person doesn't take your kind of project, look for someone whose credits sit close to it.

  2. Decide what has to survive the wall. In shoegaze the vocal often sits inside the guitars; in dream pop it is the subject and the atmosphere is the room around it. Bass and drums still have to move the song. Our guides go into it: How to Mix Shoegaze and Choosing a Shoegaze Mixing Engineer.

  3. Pay for one song first. Send the same song with the same notes to two or three people on your shortlist and compare.

  4. Read the credit line, not the client list. A list of band names on a website is a start. A credit on the record that says "mixed by" is the proof.

  5. Time zones help more than they hurt. Denmark is six hours ahead of New York and nine ahead of Los Angeles, so a European mixer works while you sleep, and an attended session in the European afternoon is your morning. How that works in practice: Online Mixing and Mastering from Denmark for Bands in the US, Canada and Australia.

FAQ

Who mixed Loveless by My Bloody Valentine?

Kevin Shields produced and mixed Loveless (1991), except "Touched", which Colm Ó Cíosóig mixed. Alan Moulder was one of about 18 engineers credited on the record.

Who mixed Slowdive's albums?

Chris Coady mixed Slowdive (2017). On everything is alive (2023), Shawn Everett mixed six of the eight tracks and Neil Halstead mixed the other two. Ian Davenport engineered both albums.

Do the famous shoegaze mixers take remote work?

Most of the engineers on the reference records don't advertise remote mixing on their own pages. The engineers who say openly that they mix shoegaze remotely are mostly independent: in this list, Chris Perry, Jordan Koop, Colin Christian, Kevin Flick, and Tapetown in Denmark.

How do shoegaze mixing engineers price their work?

Per song or per project. The price depends on the engineer, the number of songs and the scope of the record, so ask for a quote with your rough mix. Tapetown quotes each project after hearing the rough mix, in USD, EUR or DKK.

Can a US shoegaze band have its record mixed in Europe?

Yes. You send stems and a rough mix, get mixes back to check on your own speakers, and can listen in live to an attended session from home. We have mixed sessions for US bands such as Bambara, Moaning, The Fresh & Onlys and Mikal Cronin, and we mix records remotely for bands in the US, Canada and Australia.

Send us a song

If your record belongs somewhere on this list, send a rough mix and two references through online mixing, and tell us what has to survive the mix. List last checked: 28 October 2026. We review it every three months.
