Post-Punk and Noise Rock Mixing Engineers in 2026: Who to Hire, by Sound

6 min read

The post-punk and noise rock records bands reference were made by a small group of producers and mixers: Martin Hannett (Joy Division), Steve Albini (Pixies, The Jesus Lizard), Nick Launay (Killing Joke, IDLES), Dan Carey (Fontaines D.C., Squid), Daniel Fox (Gilla Band, Sprints), Marta Salogni (black midi), Seth Manchester (Daughters) and Kurt Ballou (Young Widows, Converge). Few of the ones working today advertise remote mixing. The engineers who say openly that they mix post-punk and noise rock remotely include Jordan Koop in Canada, Alex McArthur and Max Broggio in London, Michael Siciliano in Los Angeles, Bear Bites Horse in London and, in Denmark, Tapetown.

We are on this list ourselves. Tapetown Studio is a mixing, mastering and live-recording studio for indie and alternative music, founded by Rasmus Bredvig in 2011, with studios in Aarhus and on Djursland, Denmark. We put ourselves where our credits put us. Every other name is here because of a credit we checked, and nobody paid to be on the list.

How we built the list

In October 2026 we checked each credit against the album's own credits (Wikipedia, Bandcamp, label pages) or the engineer's published discography, and we say which is which. A remote line is only there when the engineer's own page or profile says so.

Three credits that get mixed up online:

  • *Protomartyr's Relatives in Descent*** (2017) was produced by the band and Sonny DiPerri, not John Congleton.

  • Daughters' self-titled album (2010) was produced by Keith Souza and Nicholas Sadler at Machines with Magnets; Seth Manchester assisted. Kurt Ballou didn't make it.

  • *Steve Albini on Surfer Rosa*** (1988) is credited with production and audio engineering. He preferred "recorded by" to "produced by", and the credit you give him is worth getting right.

None of them advertises remote mixing on a page we could find, with one partial exception: Kurt Ballou's GodCity FAQ says he will mix records recorded at other studios by other engineers, "but please get in touch 4-5 months before you begin tracking."

What the records teach is that post-punk is mostly a recording decision. Hannett turned a loud live band into a cold, spacious record; Albini recorded bands as they sounded in the room; much of the 2018–2026 wave from London and Dublin was made with a producer in the room, from Dan Carey to Daniel Fox. If you already have the recording, you need a mixer who protects the space, the dry drums and a bass that leads. Our guide goes into it: How to Mix Post-Punk, and for the louder end, How to Mix Noise Rock.

Studios in Europe

  • Bear Bites Horse, London (Wayne Adams). Wayne Adams recorded, mixed and mastered USA Nails' Feel Worse (2024). The studio's site says he is "more than happy to mix your project that has been recorded elsewhere."

  • Black Box Studio, Anjou, France. A residential studio where Sprints recorded Letter to Self (2024); its client page lists Shellac, The Ex, Dry Cleaning and The Wedding Present. A place to record a post-punk album in Europe, not a remote-mixing service.

  • Tapetown Studio, Aarhus, Denmark (that's us). Rasmus Bredvig recorded and mixed Tapetown Sessions with The Murder Capital (Ireland, 2020), Iceage (a seven-song set, 2021), Moaning (Los Angeles, 2018), The Psychotic Monks (Paris, 2021), dumb (Vancouver, 2019 and 2020) and Heathe (2019), and mixed Bambara's session (Brooklyn, 2022), recorded by Christian Alex Petersen at Grapehouse Studio in Copenhagen. Gustav Scheel mixes and masters with him; we master in-house and also work with Emil Thomsen at ET Mastering. We mix remotely for bands in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and Europe, with attended sessions across time zones, and quote each project in USD, EUR or DKK after hearing the rough mix. More: post-punk mixing at Tapetown.

It is a small scene. Daniel Fox produced The Psychotic Monks' Pink Colour Surgery two years after their Tapetown Session, and Jordan Koop recorded and mixed dumb's Seeing Green a year before theirs.

We found no other studio in Scandinavia with a checkable post-punk mixing credit and a page that offers remote work. If you know one, tell us and we'll check it for the next update.

How to choose

  1. Pick the record, then the person. Choose two records whose sound you want and find who made them. Unknown Pleasures and Dogrel are both post-punk and sound nothing alike.

  2. Ask about the bass and the space. Post-punk lives on a bass that leads, drums that stay dry and gaps that stay empty. Ask a mixer how they would handle all three on your song. More in Choosing a Mixing Engineer for a Post-Punk EP or Album.

  3. Pay for one song first. Send the same song with the same notes to two or three people and compare.

  4. Read the credit line. A band name in a bio is a start. A record that says "mixed by" is the proof.

  5. Use the time zones. Denmark is six hours ahead of New York and nine ahead of Los Angeles: a European mixer works while you sleep, and an attended session in the European afternoon is your morning. How that works: Online Mixing and Mastering from Denmark for Bands in the US, Canada and Australia.

FAQ

Who produced Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures?

Martin Hannett produced Unknown Pleasures (1979), with Chris Nagle engineering. Hannett also produced Closer (1980).

Who produced Fontaines D.C.'s Dogrel?

Dan Carey produced and mixed Dogrel (2019). James Ford produced and mixed the band's Romance (2024).

Do post-punk producers take remote mixing work?

Most of the producers behind the reference records record the band themselves and don't advertise remote mixing. Kurt Ballou will mix records recorded elsewhere if you book months ahead. The engineers who say openly that they mix post-punk remotely include Jordan Koop, Alex McArthur, Max Broggio, Michael Siciliano, Bear Bites Horse and Tapetown.

How do post-punk mixing engineers price their work?

Per song or per project. The price depends on the engineer, the number of songs and the scope of the record, so ask for a quote with your rough mix. Tapetown quotes each project after hearing the rough mix, in USD, EUR or DKK.

Can a US post-punk band have its record mixed in Europe?

Yes. You send stems and a rough mix, check each mix on your own speakers, and can listen in live to an attended session. We have mixed sessions for US bands such as Bambara and Moaning, and for dumb from Vancouver.

Send us a song

If your record belongs somewhere on this list, send a rough mix and two references through online mixing, and tell us what has to stay raw. List last checked: 28 October 2026. We review it every three months.
