About Tapetown Studio

Tapetown Studio is a mixing, mastering and live recording studio in Denmark for indie and alternative music. We mix and master online for artists anywhere, through a hybrid analogue chain. Tapetown started at Lydhavnen in Aarhus, a studio community we co-founded with other producers and engineers, and has been running for over 15 years. We are known for live sessions that are fully live, with no overdubs, published on our YouTube channel.

Mixing and mastering online

Mixing and mastering is the core of Tapetown, and it happens online. You send the files, we mix, you listen from wherever you are.

How it works:

1. Send us a rough mix and tell us about the record. We tell you honestly if we are the right fit, and send a quote.

2. Send consolidated stems that all start at the same point, your rough mix, and two or three reference tracks that show the sound you are after. Remove corrective plugins (EQ, compressors, limiters). Keep the ones that are part of the sound.

3. We send the first mix. Then we talk about the details, like vocal level or the character of the bass, and keep going until we both agree the song is the best version of itself.

4. Mastering follows the same principle as the mix: keep the dynamics, keep the edge, loud enough for streaming without ironing the record flat.

Hybrid analogue mixing means we use digital tools for editing and precision, then run the audio through real transformers, tubes and analogue circuits. That is where the glue and warmth come from.

Attended remote sessions are available, so you can listen in from your own studio while we work.

Turnaround depends on what else is in the studio and how big the project is. Tell us your release date when you get in touch and we plan from there.

Live sessions and recording

Every Tapetown live session is fully live. No overdubs. We have recorded live sessions in rooms and locations with difficult acoustics and still delivered the sound quality. The sessions are published on our YouTube channel. The live session with Elias Rønnenfelt of Iceage has passed 340,000 views. KEXP chose Tapetown for audiovisual production at SPOT Festival.

Right now we record at a temporary setup on Djursland. Our new studio at Friland on Djursland is a roughly 200 m² warehouse being converted into a recording studio, opening in 2027. • We don't work from a pop template. No default tuning, quantizing or cleanup. Imperfections that carry feeling stay in the record.

• We don't sell mixes from a price list or a checkout. Every project starts with a conversation.

• We don't take every project. If your music isn't a fit for how we work, we say so.

• We no longer run a studio in central Aarhus.

How many revisions do I get?

We keep going until we both agree the song is right. Usually that is one conversation about details after the first mix, then a final pass.

Do you master as well?

Yes. Mastering follows the same approach as the mix: the dynamics and the edge stay.
